Graffiti Artist and Illustrator
Jeba is an Illustrator and Graffiti Artist/ Mural Painter. His style developed from a continual exploration into comics and animation, coupled with his interest in music and the experiences he had with it, this inspired him growing up, painting graffiti, and how his style was born.
Hip Hop had a big influence within his work, studying the imagery within the culture. For quite a while he focused on the classic ‘Bboy Characters’ within graffiti and aimed to contribute to the culture with his own unique style. Studying the techniques of comic artists and animations, implementing those lines, colours and styling was the makings of how he got to where he is now.
Through painting graffiti and larger murals he developed an understanding of rhythm; of how an image dances across walls, which he feels should be considered with any composition, he states the images he builds always has rhythm.
He grew up in London, where he spent most of his life. He says it was a great place to grow up, he had some amazing times skateboarding through the city, painting graffiti and experiencing music. Hip hop, Drum n Bass, Dub, Dubstep, are amongst the genres that hugely influenced the images he creates. Most of what he draws is capturing the expressions, the people, the fashion and the mood he experienced within music parties and events. He says he’s very reactive to his social experiences and he wouldn’t be doing what he does without those experiences.
Jeba has been living in Barcelona for the past 7 years, which has also had a big influence on him. A city that is full of graffiti and street art, as well as being a very social and multicultural place, the street colours have definitely had an influence on his work. Barcelona has a lot of street parties and outdoor activities, and this energy has fed his creativity.
As a child he really loved drawing Thundercats and Ninja Turtles from the 90’s cartoons, and he still remembers the art forms he learnt from that. The Xmen comics from the 90’s were a big inspiration in styling. If he had to name people that definitely had an impression on him in his early years and gave him an understanding of where imagery could go, they mostly stemmed from graffiti, Mode2, Totem 2, and Snug, and then other illustrators and comic artists such as Dubelyoo, Jim Lee, and J. Scott Campbell.
Jeba uses 2 main mediums when producing artwork, firstly and fundamentally it’s pen on paper (ink liners such as micron and Molotow are particular favourites). He has a deep love for the black and white drawing, really understanding good linework, he states the balance of light and shadow is key practice to creating strong imagery. A lot of his work remains in black and white with penwork, this is how he creates the most. Secondly is spraypaint, Much of his years has always been to push himself to control a can of spray paint: the blends it can make, the
variation of line, It’s always constant progression with learning he states.
His motivation mainly stems from a constant stream of ideas and previous ideas he hasn’t had a chance to document yet. he really enjoys the landscape of hand crafted imagery and it constantly influences him in generating ideas. There is always something to draw, represent and experiment with.
