Worship states it’s been a struggle to find his own voice as an artist. Getting a degree in 2D animation was quickly followed with the decision that he didn’t want to be an animator, he wanted to be a comic artist. After releasing his first small press comic he found he didn’t want to be a comic artist either.
Many years were spent in London working in retail as he tried to figure out just what kind of artist he was meant to be. For quite a while Worship stopped drawing, lost hope and it wasn’t until a chronic illness took hold that he woke up to what he should be doing. It wasn’t until he recovered from that illness that he finally got back to drawing.
Being able to draw in many different styles without a clear voice of his own meant he was perfect for children’s book illustration, the ability to mimic other illustrator’s styles proving an advantage in that field. After a decade of grind he began to grow restless, a desire to find his own voice growing once again, but the fear of starting from scratch all over again, from abandoning a career that was safe and stable, kept him from taking the plunge. And then the chronic illness came back. And again, once he recovered, he was determined to risk it all and find the joy of drawing again. The illness had taken years from him but since he had been unable to work anyway he finally decided to take the whole year off and work tirelessly on finding his own style.
Now he is taking the next step, hoping all that hard work has paid off, hoping for a brighter, positive future. He grew up in Plymouth in England, but couldn’t wait to leave, studied in Bournemouth and soon moved to London. he has lived in South Africa, Japan and Canada for brief moments of his life but after a couple years back in Plymouth, he is currently in the process of moving to Brighton. Having a true world view has influenced his work enormously.
Many artists have influenced him, chief among them are Mike Mignola, Katsuhiro Otomo and Jamie Hewlett. Outside of the illustrators he loves the movies of John Carpenter, David Lynch, Ridley Scott and David Fincher.
Worship is mostly inspired with movies, music and anime. He spends far too many hours of his life watching, listening and studying all of them. Although he does dabble with traditional painting he is primarily a digital illustrator. The colours he likes to use can only be achieved there!
His artwork is designed to bring life to a room, to inspire creative thought and tell a story, igniting the imagination and reminding people of who we are and what we can still be. Worship explains his creativity is just in his DNA, in the soul, a constant itching in the back of his skull that can only be relieved with the creative process. Without it he is nothing.
