Dollar Note Artist
As a UK based artist, Birdy has been creating artworks all of her life. Born into a family of artists she gained a degree in visual communications specialising in illustration. She worked as a freelance illustrator for over a decade in both advertising and publishing. After the birth of her children she moved into fine art and in particular portraiture and has been working to commission as a portrait artist for twenty years.
This time has been interspersed with a number of moves: from Birmingham; the Cotswolds; Qatar in the Middle East and now Devon. Each move has brought different life challenges and influences on her work. Now back in the U.K. Birdy continues her commissioned work but has begun to explore other artistic fields including ‘Money Art’ and her own painting.
All through her artistic life, the human figure has been the overriding subject of her work. Exploring and celebrating the fragility of life is what she strives to depict in both her portraiture and her own pieces.
As ‘Birdy’, she is able to make artworks, particularly ‘money art’ pieces that are a little more adventurous without the constraints of a commissioned portrait. She was introduced to ‘money art’ by a neighbor who gave her a dollar note and said, ‘See what you can do with that’. She didn’t look back and now revels in the freedom that this genre allows. Her style is mainly realistic but subject matter varies as does medium. Black and white pencil or brightly coloured gouache, Birdy enjoys both.
Influences have been other ‘money artists’ and urban, pop and street art in general. At it’s best these genres are ever changing, expressive, rebellious and constantly pushing boundaries. A history of working as a figurative artist also inevitably influences Birdy’s work too.
What motivates Birdy to create? ‘What else would I do,? It’s who I am.’
